In collaboration with the team, a new marking and assessment policy was introduced across the whole school, to embed practice and to support transition from one class to the next, as follows:
- Both the curriculum and assessment process starts with a 'knowledge harvest' where teachers discover all the prior knowledge of the topic the children have. Learning is then planned around the gaps. This is then further assessed by the use of a 'cold task', where children complete a task without being explicitly taught the relevant skills.
- Following teaching, and assessment, children then complete a ‘hot task’ in which they are required to demonstrate their learning.
- Marking comments are short. Green ink and highlighters are used to indicate ‘green for seen’. Pink highlighters and pens are used to indicate ‘pink for think’. These pink areas are where the child needs to develop and master a skill.
- The method is consistently applied across topics and year groups.
